STEPHEN SCHWARZ
Alto Stephen Schwarz made his operatic debut in the title role of Gluck's Orfeo in Santa Barbara, CA. Other roles performed in the United States have been Oberon in Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream, the title role in John Eccles' The Judgment of Paris and Sesto in Mozart's La Clemenza di Tito. In Europe, where he lived for nine years, highlights included Handel's Rodelinda and Oberon in Sommernachtstraum. Oratorio engagements include Messiah, Elijah, Bach's St. Matthew and St. John Passion, Britten's A Ceremony of Carols in the Metropolitan Museum of art and Chichester Psalms at the Tanglewood Summer Festival. Reviewers have cited Mr. Schwarz's naturally full and warm timbre and unforced agility. Because of this, he has successfully included nineteenth century song literature such as Dichterliebe and Brahm's Two Songs for Contralto and Viola on recital programs. He was asked to sing the Pie Jesu solo in performances at the Durafle Requiem. Mr. Schwarz has a strong interest and knowledge in vocal technique and maintains a voice studio in Manhattan. He has given many workshops on vocal technique and had a large vocal studio in Amsterdam, Holland, where he lived for five years. He presently teaches voice and piano in the Music School at The Bronx House.
